Family is so important. The promises of God are to the families of believers. Parents are to instruct the children in the ways of the Lord (discipline and instruction). Within the Kingdom of God there is Parental responsibility and child responsibility. Oh Lord may me be faithful in our call and may we see our children be as our Lord increase "in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man"..............Steve

I. PURPOSE OF PROVERBS - Family Instruction For Wisdom ( Notice the directive term "my son" mentioned 23 times in the Proverbs with 16 of these in the first 7 chapters)

Pro 1:1-6 The proverbs of Solomon the son of David, king of Israel; (2) To know wisdom and instruction; to perceive the words of understanding; (3) To receive the instruction of wisdom, justice, and judgment, and equity; (4) To give subtlety to the simple, to the young man knowledge and discretion. (5) A wise man will hear, and will increase learning; and a man of understanding shall attain unto wise counsels: (6) To understand a proverb, and the interpretation; the words of the wise, and their dark sayings.

II. Fathers and Mothers to Teach the Children

(Pro 1:8) My son, hear your father's instruction, and do not forsake the law of your mother;

(Pro 3:12) for whom Jehovah loves He corrects, even as a father corrects the son with whom he is pleased.

(Pro 4:1) Sons, hear the instruction of a father, pay attention to know understanding,

Deu 6:4-7 Hear, O Israel, Jehovah our God is one Jehovah. (5) And you shall love Jehovah your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your might. (6) And these Words which I am commanding you today shall be on your heart. (7) And you shall teach them to your sons, and shall speak of them as you sit in your house, and as you walk in the way, and as you are lying down, and as you are rising up.

Eph 6:1-4 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. (2) "Honor your father and mother," which is the first commandment with a promise, Ex. 20:12 (3) "that it may be well with you, and you may be long-lived on the earth". Deut. 5:16 (4) And fathers, do not provoke your children, but nurture them in the discipline and admonition of the Lord.

III. Rod Of Correction A Tool To Be Properly Used For Family Correction

(Pro 13:24) He who spares his rod hates his son, but he who loves him seeks him with correction.

(Pro 22:15) Foolishness is bound up in the heart of a boy, the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
.
(Pro 23:13) Do not withhold correction from a boy, for if you strike him with the rod, he will not die.
.
(Pro 29:15) The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a boy let loose causes shame to his mother.

(Pro 29:17) Correct thy son, and he shall give thee rest; yea, he shall give delight unto thy soul.

(Pro 29:21) He that delicately bringeth up his servant from a child shall have him become his son at the length.

IV. A Father And Mothers Response To Having A Wise Son:

(Pro 22:6) Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.

(Pro 23:24) The father of the righteous shall greatly rejoice: and he that begetteth a wise child shall have joy of him.

V. The Call Of The Son To Listen To Parents Instruction

(Pro 29:3) He who loves wisdom gladdens his father, but a feeder of harlots wastes wealth.

(Pro 30:17) The eye that mocks its father and despises to obey its mother, the ravens of the valley shall pick it out, the sons of the eagle shall eat it.

VI. A Wise Son Is A Blessing To Mother and Dad:
(Pro 10:1) The proverbs of Solomon: A wise son makes a father rejoice, but the foolish son is his mother's sorrow.

(Pro 13:1) A wise son hears his father's instruction, but a scorner does not hear rebuke.
(Pro 15:20) A wise son makes a glad father, but a foolish man despises his mother.

(Pro 23:15) My son, if your heart is wise, my heart shall rejoice, even mine.

(Pro 23:19) My son, hear, you, and be wise, and advance your heart in the way.

(Pro 27:11) My son, become wise and give joy to my heart, so that I may return a word to him that taunts me.

(Pro 28:7) He who keeps the law is a wise son, but he who is one feeding gluttons shames his father.

VII. A Foolish Son Despises His Mother and Is a Ruin To His Father:

(Pro 17:25) A foolish son is a vexation to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.

(Pro 19:13) A foolish son is a ruin to his father, and a wife's quarreling a never ending dripping.

VIII. A Foolish Son Causes Many Sorrows:
.
(Pro 15:5) A fool despises his father's instruction, but he keeping correction is sensible.
.
(Pro 17:21) He who fathers a fool has sorrow for it; yea, the father of a fool has no joy.
.
(Pro 17:25) A foolish son is a vexation to his father, and bitterness to her who bore him.
.
(Pro 19:13) A foolish son is a ruin to his father, and a wife's quarreling a never ending dripping.
.
(Pro 19:26) He who assaults his father and chases his mother away, he is a son who causes shame and brings reproach.
.
(Pro 20:20) Whoever curses his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in deep darkness.
.
(Pro 28:7) He who keeps the law is a wise son, but he who is one feeding gluttons shames his father.
.
(Pro 29:15) The rod and reproof give wisdom, but a boy let loose causes shame to his mother.

(Pro 30:11) A generation curses its father, and does not bless its mother,

IX. Birds OF A Feather Flock Together

(Pro 28:24) He who robs his father or his mother, and says, It is not a transgression, he shall be a partner to a man who corrupts.

X. Son Do Not Despise the Chastening Of The Lord

(Pro 3:11) My son, despise not the chastening of the LORD; neither be weary of his correction:

(Pro 3:12) For whom the LORD loveth he correcteth; even as a father the son in whom he delighteth.

(Pro 19:27) Cease, my son, to hear the instruction that causeth to err from the words of knowledge.

XII. Judgment Comes To The Disobedient Son

Pro 20:20) Whoso curseth his father or his mother, his lamp shall be put out in obscure darkness.
